Co-op mug

The Chairman, Mr Gwyn Thomas has received this mug as a gift from his son. It was purchased on e.bay and dates from 1908, some eighty years before the village branch closed. The building has had several owners since and is still the main shop in the village. Does anyone have any information regarding the mug and what it was commemorating in 1908, or whether the CO-OP branch began in that year?
