Some Personal
Thoughts on the Place-name ‘Resolven’.
The Original
Place-name:
The original name of our village and its immediate environs
was ‘Soflen’. ‘Soflen’ is a feminine
singular noun in Welsh meaning ‘stubble’; stubble being defined as the short
stalks left above ground after a crop has been cut or harvested. So the Welsh
name could be loosely translated into English as ‘Stubbleland’.
This Welsh place-name in all likelihood dates back to the
early medieval period and even possibly to as far back as the Celtic Iron Age.
That this is highly likely can be evidenced by the name ‘Nedd’, the Welsh name
for the river Neath, which marks the western boundary of the Soflen territory,
and which definitely dates back to the pre-Roman period; also by the name
‘Clydach’ for the brook of that name, which marks the territory’s southern
boundary, and is a Goidelic derivation introduced in the fifth century A.D. at
the time of the early medieval Irish settlers into Wales. (It is interesting to
note that there are in fact two waterways called Clydach in the locality: the
Clydach Isaf, today’s Melincwrt brook, which is the one referred to above as
the Soflen manor’s southern boundary, and the Clydach Uchaf, today simply
called Resolven Brook, which transversed the manorial lands.)
The Change of
Place-name:
About the year 1090, the Normans invaded the old kingdom of
Morgannwg (Glamorgan) and defeated its last native Welsh ruler, Iestyn ap
Gwrgant. However, as a gesture of good will, the Norman invaders allowed Iestyn
to keep the land between the rivers Nedd and Afan, and this area, called Afan
Wallia, was distinguished by being the only Welsh-ruled area in Norman-occupied
south Wales.
Iestyn’s son, Caradoc, subsequently became the first lord of
Afan Wallia. He, in his turn, named his brother, Rees, as lord of Soflen, which
was a manor or territory within Afan Wallia. Rees held this lordship of Soflen
until 1129, when Sir Richard Granville, the Norman lord of Glamorgan,
transferred it from Rees to the abbot and monks of Neath Abbey who had arrived
that year from Savigny in western Normandy, Rees exchanging his Soflen
territory for that of Cilybebyll. For our purpose, only the following facts
from the preceding information need to be remembered: the name Rees (also
spelled as Rhys, Rys, Res, Rice); the name Soflen (for the manor or territory
which Rees occupied as lord for some thirty years); and the date 1129 (when
Rees relinquished the lordship of Soflen to Neath Abbey.)
Almost immediately after Rees’s departure to Cilyebeyll and
the acquisition and occupation of the manor by its new lord, the place-name
‘Soflen’ begins to mutate into a multitude of different forms. In charters
written in Latin between 1130 and 1600, we find, for example, Resoulyn;
Resowlen; Rosowlin; Rossaulin; Roshowelin; Rosaulin; Rossaulin; Rossavun;
Russhelyn; Rossoulyn; Rossoylyn; Reisoulond. Later, in 1722, in a letter
written in English, we have actually two different forms of the place-name
almost side by side: Rossolven and Rossoluen. It is only in 1781, in a report
in English dealing with tithes, that we first come across the familiar form:
Resolven.
To account for these variations, it should be borne in mind
that, at this time, there were four languages in common use: Welsh (the
language of the local population), English and Norman French (the languages of
the Anglo-Norman invaders), and Latin (the language of administration, law,
church, and official documents). The native Welsh, for example, would have had,
at least initially, little, if any, knowledge of English and almost certainly
no French, let alone Latin. Likewise, the French monks who followed in the wake
of the invaders would at this time have had no knowledge of Welsh and perhaps
only a bare minimum of English. Also, it should be noted that no standard spelling
(orthography) existed until the nineteenth century; for example, the personal
name ‘Rees’ was often signed or written as ‘Res’, ‘Rhys’ or ‘Rys’, as witnessed
by the extant medieval signatures of Rhys ap Llewelyn, lord of Glyn Nedd, and
by the inscription, still visible today, on a a fine memorial ninth- century
memorial cross at the church of Llanilltud Fawr/Llantwit Major which reads:
“This cross Houelt (Hywel) prepared for the soul of Res (Rhys), his father”.
So the time was ripe for linguistic confusion, especially in
hand-written manuscripts. It seems to me
highly likely that, through scribal error on the part of the abbey’s
monks, the two words Rees Soflen, a personal name and a place name meaning Rees
(lord of) of Soflen, became unwittingly compounded and contracted into one word
and spelled as Resoflen or Rhysoflen, where the personal name element has been
lost and forgotten, and only a place- name remains. If this were the case, the
field would be left wide open to the host of different spellings shown above.
The Meaning of the
Place-name:
We have seen that Soflen means Stubble (-land), that is,
land where the stalks of crops remain after harvesting. The question is why
would this be an appropriate name for a place when stubble could be seen almost
anywhere and everywhere? The answer is in the type of crop being described; and
that crop, I believe, is the reed. This claim is substantiated by the following
three pieces of evidence, two historical and one circumstantial:
Firstly, in 1591, Sir Edward Mansel wrote in his Conquest of Glamorgan “To Rhys the third
son of Iestyn, was given the Lordship of Reeding or Soflen.” Here Mansel
definitively equates the Welsh word Soflen with the English word Reeding. (The
suffix ‘- ing’ at the end of the word is a Viking import and means marsh or
meadow. So Reeding would here signify reed marshes or meadows.)
Secondly, after having moved to Cilybebell, Rhys’s status as
the former lord of Soflen/Reeding, became immortalised in the name of one of
the Cilybebell estates which were inherited by his descendants: the village of
Reeding/Rhydin: today’s Rhydding.
Thirdly, a more circumstantial piece of evidence: reeds grow
in both fresh and salt water, in shallow or marshy ground which is frequently
flooded. Exactly those conditions we meet in Soflen, where water clearly
defines the boundaries on three sides of the manorial lands: Clydach isaf/ Melincwrt
Brook in the south, the Gwrach Brook in the north and the River Nedd/ Neath in
the west. Moreover, the lands are bisected by the Clydach uchaf/ Resolven
Brook, along with several other streams, and its fields are frequently
flooded. The reed was a useful and
widespread material for our distant ancestors, being used to thatch roofs of
houses (slates not being used until the nineteenth century) and in making mats,
chairs, baskets, fences and even fishing rods. It is a wild species which does
not require planting each year, but it does require maintenance. The
traditional way of doing this was to burn the old standing reeds in the winter
for several years and in each successive spring the young plants grow
increasingly straight as they are not now impeded by the dead growth of
previous years. Reeds were harvested annually or often biannually. After being
burned, or cut by scythe or sickle at harvest, only stubble would remain.
The Restoration of
the original Place-name? :
If the above version is correct, then the following can be
stated: the ‘Re’ prefix in the word Resolven does not refer, as is often
believed, to ‘rhos’ meaning ‘a moor’ in English, (although there may indeed be
some contamination with that word in the earliest variants of the place-name);
nor does it refer to ‘rhyd’, ‘a ford’, nor to ‘rhiw’, ‘a hill’.
It can also be stated, contrary to some commonly- held views, that the village is not named after
Mynydd Solfen; quite the reverse: the mountain is named after the manorial
lands, the ancient mountain trackway, Cefn Ffordd, forming the eastern boundary
of the manor. Nor was the village called Ynysfach before the advent of the
railway in 1850: Ynysfach simply refers to one of several farms in the central
area of the village and not to the village as a whole.
It can also be stated that the increasingly- popular form:
‘Resolfen’ is really only a twentieth-century variant of the eighteenth-century
variant: ‘Resolven’, (although in its favour the English consonant ‘v’ is
correctly replaced by the original and more accurate Welsh ‘f’; yet it entirely
misses the metathesis, the change in the position of consonants which often
occurs naturally over time in the spoken language, (for example the word
‘remuneration’ pronounced as
‘renumeration’), and keeps the consonants ‘lf’ rather than the original
‘fl’.)
I am sure that Rees, the medieval lord of the manor of what
we now call Resolven, would be bemused and perhaps highly flattered to think
that his name has been unconsciously and mistakenly embedded in the original
place-name and passed unknowingly down the centuries. So perhaps it is high
time to revert to the original form: ‘SOFLEN’, in all its pristine purity!
